Rob Burbea is well known for his work in the Insight Meditation tradition (“Seeing That Frees). He then departed and created the paradigm called ‘The Soulmaking Dharma’, ‘Sensing with Soul’ and the ‘Imaginal’. It is an integral, metamodern, metasystematic update of Buddhism, which is in direct dialogue with Freud, Jung, Feynman, Hillman, and Foucault .
The Imaginal is informed by post-modern deconstruction but further enriched by phenomenological exploration resulting from deep and rigorous contemplative practice. It is also the work of a person moved by environmental and anthropogenic climate change, calling us to move beyond sensory or intellectual deconstruction towards having our whole hearts and minds on fire with care for our planet and others.
Burbea’s work is massive so I thought I’d provide a little orientation map inspired by the multiple sources I’ve found on the topic. Please use with caution and try to craft your own path — I’m also still learning. Below you will find some of the themes mentioned in the pre-requisites, with talks you can listen to.
